JOB DESCRIPTION: ANIMAL TECHNICIAN

ACCOUNTABILITY: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

DIRECT REPORTS: N/A

 

ASSISTS IN DAILY OPERATIONS OF ANIMAL SHELTER. ENSURES THE SAFE AND HUMANE TREATMENT OF ALL SHELTER ANIMALS WHILE UPHOLDING THE HIGHEST STANDARD OF CARE.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

● Assists in all aspects of the day-to-day Animal Care operations. Ensures that work is done in a timely fashion and in accordance with established procedures and state laws. Will serve as backup to Animal Director in their absence.

● Administers treatment of Animal Care and Community Care programs, including but not limited to vaccinations, weight checks, flea treatment, and deworming.

● Answer agency phones and respond to inquiries. Triage/delegate inquiries to proper agency personnel and ensure follow-up response is completed.

● Assist Animal Director with processing adoption applications in accordance to PAWS GH adoption policy and procedure

● Schedule appointments for adoption meet and greet, home visits, and follow-up care.

● Participates as a supportive member of the PAWSGH team to identify health and safety concerns, temperament issues, safe and humane handling, and adoptability of shelter animals.

● Works collaboratively with all staff members to achieve the completion of daily work assignments, follow proper shelter protocols. Provides input on continuous improvement in agency process, procedures and protocols, including but not limited to physical examinations, vaccinations, euthanasia, and other procedures.

● Treats animals humanely, with compassion and concern both on and off the job and transmits these values to others.

● Ensures a high level of communication with internal and external customers and the ability to maintain confidentiality and sensitivity in all agency communication.

● Provides technical and administrative support to Executive Director and Animal Director as directed.

● Assists in promoting a positive business relationship with veterinarians, animal control officers, and other stakeholders outside the shelter.

● Other duties and projects as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

● High school graduate or GED equivalent.

● Two to three years of experience working in animal working with animals in a veterinary hospital or animal shelter and/or licensed RVT/AHT.Or an equivalent combination of education and practical experience to possess knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential job functions.

● Must submit to a background check and have no felony convictions.

● Excellent communications, public relations, supervisory and written skills.

● Shows maturity, good judgment, and performs duties in a professional manner.

● Accumulated knowledge of and compassion for domestic animals.

● Experienced in working with governmental agencies, community groups, volunteers, and animal welfare organizations.

● Demonstrated capability to be a self-starter, facilitator, organizer, and innovator.

● Ability to plan and implement projects with little supervision and must be able to work independently.

● Ability to operate a personal computer, word processing software, copy machine, and answer telephones in the prescribed manner.

● Valid Washington drivers license with good driving history.

● Must be in good physical and mental health with no allergic conditions, which might be aggravated by exposure to animals.

● Ability to lift 50 pounds.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

1.)  40-hour workweek, including weekends and evenings as scheduled, with intermittent overtime and/or evening work at sites away from the Shelter.

2.)  Compliance with PAWSGH Employee Policy Manual.

3.)  Frequent contact with public in a fast-paced and changing work environment, which, at times, may be stressful or emotionally charged.

4.)  Exposure to dead, sick, injured, unruly, vicious, and/or dangerous animals and intermittent exposure to parasites and infectious diseases.

5.)  Willingness to attend training programs and to upgrade skills as needed.
